Issue 3/2023

Slancheva, B., Neonatology Clinic, SBALAG „Mother‘s House“ EAD, Medical University Sofia

Premature newborns have serious medical problems and are often unable to receive breast milk from their own mother. A premature infant is deprived of the immunological defense mechanisms present in its own mother‘s breast milk. In the pediatric population, there is a high frequency of nasopharyngeal carriage of pneumococci and other vaccine-preventable diseases, which is a serious problem in premature newborns, especially those with a brother or sister attending a children‘s institution. Infections in premature infants are particularly severe and can be fatal. The issue of immunization policy for premature infants is significant for clinical practice and requires consideration of current information on vaccine immunogenicity and safety. Therefore, it is necessary from the immunization program for premature and low birth weight babies in order to ensure maximum anti-infective protection.
