Parvovirus B19 is a DNA virus widely distributed in the population. Up to 80% of adult patients have had an encounter with the virus in their lifetime. It can causes a self-limiting febrile illness in childhood, but the infection is also associated with rash, arthritis, arthralgia, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, hypocomplementemia, and vasculitis. The virus can mimic, trigger or exacerbate a number of rheumatological and autoimmune diseases.
