Inflammation of the pharynx is called pharyngitis. It can be acute or chronic and rarely occurs as a primary disease. Pharyngitis can accompany acute or chronic inflammation of neighboring organs – nose, paranasal cavities, oral cavity, acute and chronic tonsillitis, general diseases (tuberculosis, syphilis, anemia, etc.), allergic diseases of the upper respiratory tract, etc.
Combined forms of pharyngitis such as rhinopharyngitis, acute tonsillitis, tonsillopharyngitis and pharyngolaryngitis are common and are grouped under the diagnosis of pharyngitis. Typical symptoms are redness of the mucous membrane, pain on swallowing and irritation in the throat. The majority of acute throat infections are viral. Beta-hemolytic streptococci of group A play a particularly important role. Chronic pharyngitis is widespread and results from persistent diffuse inflammation of the pharyngeal mucosa.
