Bronchiolitis represents one of the leading causes of hospitalization in infancy. In Bulgaria, more than 15,000 infants were hospitalized with this diagnosis in 2025. This paper reviews the most common etiological agents responsible for bronchiolitis and discusses novel preventive strategies, with particular emphasis on passive immunoprotection achieved through maternal vaccination during pregnancy.
Key words: bronchiolitis; respiratory syncytial virus (RSV); airway obstruction; dyspnea; hospitalization.
