Dysplastic nevi are benign pigmented skin lesions characterized by distinctive clinical and histopathological features (1). Although they are not malignant themselves, their presence is a well-recognized marker of an increased risk for the development of cutaneous melanoma (2,3). The risk increases proportionally with the number of dysplastic nevi and is particularly high in patients with a family history of melanoma or with Familial Atypical Multiple Mole Melanoma (FAMMM) syndrome (4). Most melanomas arise de novo on clinically normal skin; however, approximately 20% develop from a pre-existing dysplastic nevus (5). Early identification of high-risk individuals, regular dermoscopic surveillance, and adequate photoprotection are essential for early diagnosis and improved prognosis (5,6,7).
Key words: dysplastic skin nevi, atypical nevi, malignant melanoma
