Cryptosporidiosis is a widespread protozoan infection affecting humans and animals, transmitted mainly via the fecal-oral route. Despite its clinical and public health significance, the disease has long been underestimated due to its nonspecific clinical presentation, limited diagnostic capabilities, and the lack of effective etiological treatment for all patient groups. This review article summarizes current data on the etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cryptosporidiosis, with particular emphasis on its increasing importance in Europe and Bulgaria.
