Erectile Dysfunction (Dysfunctio erectionis)
Erection is a highly complex process involving the temporary transition of the copulatory organ—the penis—into an enlarged, erect state with a firmer consistency. The phenomenon known as an erection is triggered by nerve signals from the central and peripheral nervous systems, accompanied by a precise vascular, hormonal, and muscular response achieved through an absolute synchrony of arterial inflow and venous outflow in appropriate volumes. The duration, degree of elevation, magnitude, and firmness determine whether the erection will successfully fulfill its function and purpose. These parameters vary primarily depending on the blood engorgement of the corpora cavernosa.
