Fibromyalgia is a syndrome characterized by chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by systemic symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, joint stiffness, depression, and cognitive dysfunction. The pathogenesis of the muscle pain is not yet fully elucidated, but it reflects a complex interplay between central and peripheral mechanisms, involving altered pain modulation, low-grade inflammation, autonomic imbalance, as well as genetic and epigenetic factors. The therapeutic approach is multidisciplinary, combining pharmacological interventions with non-pharmacological methods.
Key words: fibromyalgia, chronic pain, cytokines, biomarkers, inflammation
