The traditional Balkan diet is a dietary pattern closely aligned with the Mediterranean diet and associated with a range of potential health benefits. Its principal characteristics include a rich diversity of fermented dairy products, bee products, cereals, and a wide range of locally grown vegetables and fruits. The regimen provides substantial amounts of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibers. Particular importance is also attributed to food preparation methods, including the simultaneous cooking of meat and vegetables in a single cooking vessel, which is a characteristic of the traditional Balkan cuisine. Overall, this dietary pattern combines valuable nutritional properties and may serve as a basis for healthy and preventive dietary approaches.
