Mitral regurgitation or mitral insufficiency worldwide is the second most common valve defect requiring surgical treatment. It is an abnormal return of blood from the left ventricle to the left atrium during ventricular systole. The incidence of mitral regurgitation is growing in line with life expectancy and the aging of the world’s population. There are two main types of mitral insufficiency – primary (degenerative) and secondary (functional). In the first type there is organic damage to the valve and /or valve apparatus, and in the second – secondary dysfunction of the mitral valve due to damage in the structure and /or function of the left ventricle. The gold standard for the treatment of mitral regurgitation is surgery, and in recent years new high-tech transcatheter methods of treatment have been used in the clinical practice. The most popular and proven method over time is through the MitraClip edge-to-edge transcatheter approximation system. Other endovascular treatments include the use of the percutaneous system Pascal (Edwards Lifesciences) and Cardioband by transseptal access and NeoChord and Harpoon by transapical access.
