Autoimmune blistering dermatoses (AIBD) are a heterogeneous group of rare, organ-specific autoimmune diseases characterized by the appearance of vesicles and bullae on the skin and mucous membranes. AIBD are related to high morbidity due to loss of fluids, electrolytes, microelements, and proteins from the erosive lesions. Other systemic aspects of AIBDs include their frequent association with other autoimmune, inflammatory, endocrine, oncologic, etc. disorders. Besides, the therapy of AIBDs usually relies on systemic corticosteroids, that are related to multiple adverse effects as a consequence of the high doses and prolonged administration. All these aspects are discussed below.
