Since 2010 the global epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including Bulgaria, has been characterized by significant changes compared to previous decades regarding the types of pathogens involved and the diverse factors driving the unprecedented global rise in bacterial infections. According to recent reports from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), after more than a decade of relative stability, cases of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia are reaching record highs. This outbreak of classic sexually transmitted diseases is altering the profile of affected patients and posing new challenges for public health.
