The oral mucosa is frequently involved in a number of inflammatory or autoimmune dermatoses and can provide valuable diagnostic information in the early stages of the disease. In some diseases, the mucosal changes precede the development of skin manifestations, in others they are an indicator of disease activity or systemic involvement. Despite their high diagnostic value, examination of the oral cavity remains insufficiently involved in the routine dermatological status.
Knowledge of the characteristic changes in oral lichen planus, pemphigus vulgaris, mucous membrane pemphigoid, lupus erythematosus, and Behçet’s disease allows for earlier recognition of the disease, more accurate differential diagnosis, and timely treatment initiation. This review considers the oral mucosa as an important source of diagnostic and prognostic information in modern dermatological practice.
