Metabolic syndrome (MS) characterizes a cluster of metabolic dysregulations, including insulin resistance, atherogenic dyslipidemia, central obesity, and hypertension. The pathogenesis of MS encompasses multiple genetic and acquired pathological processes that fall under the umbrella of insulin resistance and chronic low-grade inflammation. If left untreated, MS is associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Given that CVD is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, it has become important to investigate the role of MS in this context. MS is a new clinical entity that has been the subject of numerous studies over the past few decades. However, many aspects of this clinical entity are still not fully understood and many questions remain unanswered to date. In this review, we provide the historical background and highlight the epidemiology of MS. We also discuss the current and most recent knowledge of the histopathology and pathophysiology of the disease.
