Liver transplantation is a definitive treatment option for patients with decompensated chronic liver disease, metabolic-associated liver disorders, hepatocellular carcinoma as well as acute liver failure. Careful selection and preparation of candidate recipients are of exceptional importance in achieving the ultimate goal of life extension and improvement of their quality of life. The poor nutritional status of the patients with decompensated liver disease is associated with multiple complications leading to increased morbidity and higher mortality rate during surgical intervention, which together contribute to reduced survival outcomes, both before and after liver transplantation. This article aims to review current methods for evaluation of a malnutrition status, associated sarcopenia and frailty in potential liver transplant recipients. We will examine the effect of malnutrition on the outcomes of the transplantation process and outline current treatment strategies.
