Neurology Clinic, University Hospital “Sofiamed” – Sofia

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic demyelinating disease of central nervous system. Cognitive deficits are obtained in 1/5 to ¾ of patients with MS. The type of cognitive dysfunctions varies. The most impaired cognitive functions in MS are information processing speed, verbal and visual memory, executive functions and visual-spatial processing. Patients with MS should be examined by screening neuropsychological battery at disease onset and during the course of the disease. Patients with cognitive decline should be referred to neuropsychologist. Treatment of cognitive impairments associated with MS is complex with main role of non-drug therapy.

Key words: multiple sclerosis, cognitive impairments.
