Melanocytoma is a rare, highly pigmented benign tumor, typically affecting the optic nerve disc. Due to its pigmented structure, it can be mistakenly interpreted as a malignant melanoma, which is the most common malignant tumor in the fundus of adult individuals. Melanocytoma is considered to be a relatively stationary lesion with no ocular symptoms, but in 10-15% of cases, it may show slight growth and cause visual disturbances. In 1-2% of cases, melanocytoma undergoes malignant transformation into melanoma, which necessitates monitoring of patients and knowledge of this pathology.
Key words: melanocytoma, magnocellular nevus, pseudomelanoma.
