The sacrococcygeal pilonidal disease is an inflammatory condition often seen in the general practice. It is a cause of considerable morbidity and impaired social functioning due to the prolonged period of illness, chronic complications, as well as problematic surgical treatment and frequent recurrence. The term ‘pilonidal’ is originating from the Latin words for hair (pilus) and nest (nidus), suggesting a nest of hair. Common presentations range from simple pilonidal sinus, through acute abscess up to extensive chronic infection combined with fistula formation and purulent discharging.
During the acute stage a localized incision with curettage of the cavity and primary drainage is the treatment of choice. In the chronic stage different surgical techniques are used in order to remove the area of chronic inflammation with healing via primary suture or laying open wound for secondary healing. Over the last few years, the endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment has been introduced.
