The sacroiliac joint is part of the pelvic girdle along with the iliac bones and the pubic bone. It has a load-bearing function, determined by the strong ligamentous apparatus and its well-matched articular surfaces. Sacroiliitis is an inflammation of the sacroiliac joints, and magnetic resonance imaging is one of the most important imaging modalities for its diagnosis in the early stages. Magnetic resonance imaging provides excellent contrast resolution of tissues. It is a very sensitive method for detecting subtle early pathology, especially edema, which is a specific and early sign of underlying pathology.
Key words: sacroiliitis, nuclear magnetic resonance, axial spondyloarthritis
