Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease of unknown etiology, affecting approximately 1% of the population. It is characterized by progressive joint destruction, disability and concomitant extra-articular manifestations. General practitioners (GPs) play a key role in early recognition, referral to a rheumatologist and follow-up of patients. Timely diagnosis and initiation of therapy soon after the onset of symptoms are crucial for preserving joint function and improving the prognosis of the disease.
Key words: rheumatoid arthritis, prognostic factors, diagnostics, general practice, early treatment
