Osteoporosis (OP) is a metabolic bone disease with serious consequences. It leads to a decrease in density and deterioration of the microarchitecture of the bone, which worsens bone strength and increases the risk of fractures. It is often called a “silent” disease, since symptoms appear mainly in the stage of fractures. Diagnosis is based on a complex of laboratory and instrumental examinations, which helps to determine the degree of bone loss, structural changes, the state of bone metabolism and exclude concomittant diseases associated with bone metabolism. With timely diagnosis, lifestyle change and intake of appropriate medications, OP can be treated, and fractures – prevented. In recent years, the guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of postmenopausal OP have been updated, providing a common understanding of fracture risk and coordination of risk categorisation and therapeutic behaviour.
