Vitamin D is considered a crucial nutrient for calcium absorption and homeostasis, thus influencing bone health and metabolism. However, research over the past few decades has revealed that this multivitamin has multiple extraskeletal effects and plays a major role in disease prevention and treatment.
With this in mind, a serious public health problem has emerged as vitamin D insufficiency is estimated to affect about 50% of the world‘s population, and vitamin D deficiency affects 1 billion people, regardless of their age and ethnicity.
The relationship between vitamin D and mental health has so far been mainly investigated for depression or depressive symptoms, and some potential mechanisms explaining the influence of vitamin D have been suggested.
