Issue 1/2025

Valkova, M.
Neurology Clinic, University Hospital “Sofiamed” – Sofia

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a serious social and medical (especially therapeutic) problem. The exact mechanism of AD development is unclear. However, recent studies showed potential role of vascular risk factors (especially arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, atrial fibrillation, ischemic heart disease, heart failure and carotid atherosclerosis) in AD development and progression. They act through brain hypoperfusion, endothelium dysfunction, oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, promotion of neuro-inflammation and dysfunction of glymphatic brain system. The adequate control of vascular risk factors can delay the progression of AD.

Key words: Alzheimer’s disease, vascular risk factors
