Uveitis is a complex inflammatory disease with a wide-ranging etiology and causes of various nature. They represent a diagnostic challenge for both ophthalmologists and general practitioners, as well as immunologists. The risk of visual impairing complications, the high rate of relapses, the difficult-to-predict response to a therapeutical approach and the obstacles in diagnostics are the main challenges of uveitis. The prevalence of different types of uveitis depends on many factors, such as age, sex, race, geographical distribution, environmental influence, genetics and social habits. Too often the battle with those inflammatory diseases is unequal and the visual outcome for the patient depends on the timely diagnosis and initiation of treatment. General practitioners are usually on the front line in the fight against uveitis. These personnel, so important for the health system, are often the first to encounter the noticeable subjective and objective symptoms of uveitis in their patients. It is precisely on these healthcare providers
and their level of awareness, that the timely start of the long and complex clinical path, composed of diagnosis, treatment and follow-up and potentially end in positive visual outcomes and good quality of life for the patients, often depends. In order to increase awareness and support our colleagues in the assessment of patients with suspected uveitis, we have created guidelines for general practitioners to facilitate early diagnosis of uveitis and to help increase awareness, the healing process and furthermore improve the quality of life of patients. The problem of awareness is an important issue in modern medical practice. Improving communication between different units is of profound importance for prevention and effective results in the fight against uveitis.
