It is known that premature infants are a high-risk group of newborns and their clinical problems are related to the immaturity of organ systems, including the visual system.
The main eye problem associated with prematurity is retinopathy of prematurity, which manifests in the late neonatal period, but it is not the only eye pathology described in premature infants.
The article discusses eye injuries that can be detected in the neonatal period in premature infants and are risky for vision. In the majority of cases, the loss of visual functions in premature newborns is preventable today.
