Premature ovarian failure (POI) is a complex and relatively little – known nosological unit with countless etiologies and multisystem consequences resulting from premature ovarian aging. This is a common cause of infertility, characterized by amenorrhea, hypoestrogenism and elevated gonadotropin levels in women under 40 years of age. Recognition and management of POIs is becoming increasingly important as women increasingly postpone their reproductive plans. Due to its heterogeneous nature and different mechanisms of occurrence, elucidation of the cause of POI is a key point in the diagnosis and treatment of affected patients. Although the underlying cause remains unexplained in most cases, various data show that POI has a strong genetic component.
This review covers the concept of POI together with its etiology and the management of various short-term and long-term health consequences that negatively affect the physical and psychosocial well – being of patients.

Key words: Premature ovarian insufficiency, POI, ovarian aging, infertility
