Issue 3/2024

Vlahova, D., Georgieva, R., Mangurov, I., Nikolova, E.
Neonatology Clinic, SBALDB, EAD – Sofia, Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, Medical University – Sofia

In recent years 2 to 10% of pregnancies are affected by impairment of glucose metabolism. 80% of them are due to impaired glucose tolerance diagnosed firstly during the pregnancy or gestational diabetes. For the mothers with pregestational diabetes 35% are affected by type 1 DM and 65% by type 2 DM. Diabetes during pregnancy might seriously affect the development of the fetus. Newborns of diabetic mothers are predisposed to various complications, including metabolic and hematologic disorders, respiratory distress, cardiovascular diseases, and neurologic complications, like perinatal asphyxia and birth trauma. Multiple studies have established that good glucose level control before and during pregnancy significantly decreases the risk for development of fetal and newborn complications.

Key words: newborn, gestational diabetes, pregestational diabetes
