Known since the remote past HSV causes a lifetime chronic infection with multiple episodes of recurrences. Clinical symptoms may vary from mild skin and mucous lesions to severe, life-threatening disease. Genital herpes simplex is one of the most frequent sexually transmitted infections worldwide with prevalence which is increasing annually.
This review presents the current knowledge about the epidemiology, clinical picture, diagnostic approaches, treatment and different factors responsible for the asymptomatic spreading of the virus.
