Celiac Disease (CD) is one of several diseases associated with gluten. It is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the small intestine in genetically predisposed children and adults and can manifest in any age. Gluten exposure triggers an inflammatory cascade which leads to small bowel mucosal atrophy with various intestinal and extraintestinal symptoms which makes it a challenge to diagnose. Diagnostic methods include specific serology and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with duodenal biopsies. There is no specific treatment except a strict life-long gluten-free diet.
