Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is one of the rarer causes of acute and chronic liver diseases, but its incidence has been increasing over the years. Its clinical manifestation is diverse – from asymptomatic course to liver failure. It is often accompanied by the manifestation of extrahepatic autoimmune diseases. There are clinical, laboratory and histological criteria for diagnosis. The therapy consists of immunosuppressive treatment, which is usually lifelong, and the side effects of the therapy itself also lead to a deterioration in the quality of life. Regular follow-up plays a leading role – both in terms of the disease itself and in terms of the manifestations of the side effects of the therapy.
Key words: AIH, immunosuppressive therapy, chronic liver disease
