Abstract:
Neuroendocrine tumors, until recently called carcinoids, are a special type of neoplastic diseases originating from neuroendocrine cells. Neuroendocrine cells are found in a large number of organs, they communicate through hormones and regulate a number of processes in the human body.
This type of neoplasia is usually slow-growing, and in children they are most often found in the appendix and the lung. In adults, the most common location is in the gastrointestinal tract (48%), lung (25%), pancreas (9%), but they are also found in the prostate, breast, thymus, skin. Dissemination to other organs is more characteristic of elderly patients.
Neuroendocrine tumors are diseases with increasing incidence and continue to be both a diagnostic problem and a therapeutic challenge due to the lack of specific effective therapy and a unified approach.
