Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder in which the therapeutic target is not only the symptoms of the disease, but also the functioning of the sufferer, family and loved ones, and globally – the attitudes of the society. Almost all aspects of human mental activity are affected: perceptions, thinking, emotions, drive, attention, memory with significant impairment of cognitive functions and changes in behavior. Probably this mental disorder has existed since ancient times and is a part of the history of mankind, which we judge by written sources that have come down to us. How have people treated mental illness in different eras? Why have some of the methods been recognized and then rejected, while others, almost 100 years after their first application, still find widespread support among the psychiatric community? Despite the advances of modern science, drug treatment still poses challenges in the treatment of schizophrenia.
