Obsessive-compulsive disorder can significantly impair an individual‘s normal functioning and social relationships. It is often comorbid with other psychiatric disorders. This article examines the etiopathogenesis of the disorder, which involves various factors. The role of the basal ganglia in its pathogenesis is discussed. The clinical presentation is explored, including the distinction between obsessive and overvalued ideas. The diagnostic criteria are reviewed, with comparisons made between the ICD-10 and ICD-11, as well as between the DSM-IV and DSM-V criteria. One of the scales used for assessing the disorder (Y-BOCS) is also described. The differential diagnostic plan for the disorder is examined, along with its relationship to neurological diseases and treatment options.
Key words: obsessive-compulsive disorder, etiopathogenesis, basal ganglia, diagnostic criteria, treatment
