Cataract surgery is one of the most performed and most successful surgical procedures worldwide, with over 20 million operations performed annually and high success rates. Despite this, cataract remains the leading cause of preventable blindness, accounting in 2020 for approximately 17 million cases of blindness and around 80 million cases of moderate to severe visual impairment among individuals over 50 years of age. This review presents contemporary trends in cataract surgery, including femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS), premium intraocular lenses for presbyopia and astigmatism correction, light-adjustable lenses (LAL), and intraoperative digital technologies. Special attention is given to the Optical Quality Analysis System (OQAS) as an objective preoperative assessment method that enables more precise patient selection and leads to more reliable postoperative outcomes.
Key words: cataract, phacoemulsification, femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery, multifocal intraocular lenses, EDOF, light-adjustable lenses, OQAS
