Issue 8/2025

Vassileva, P.
Specialized Eye Hospital “Acad. Pashev” – Sofia

Myopia is currently considered to be an environmentally driven condition which develops in genetically susceptible individuals. At present many research are designed to identify the contribution of genetically and environ factors in complex development of epigenetic mechanism in myopia progression. Many studies demonstrated that an individual’s genetic risk of myopia is influenced by education level and time spent outdoors: two major variable reported to affect myopia risk. Application of low doses atropine drops is discussed for prevention of myopia progression in children. Prospective study of myopia suggest that heritable myopia is not necessarily unenviable. In some countries the term “digital adulthood” (15-16 y.o.) is introduced in order to restrict children on-line dependence for myopia prevention.

Key words: myopia in children, myopia progression, epigenetic factors, role of atropine
