There are multiple publications but no consensus regarding the causes for pterygium surgery, the available surgical methods, adjuvant therapy, type and duration of post-surgery treatments, and suitable therapy of early symptoms. There is a wide array of available surgeries and modifications with considerable variation of frequency of relapse, duration of the surgery, and patient’s comfort. We can say that, regarding pterygium therapy, potions belong to the ancient times, classical reconstructive surgery with sutures belongs to the resent past, sutureless and glue-free methods with adjuvant therapy with modern equipment belong to the present, and ophtalmogenetics and molecular biology to the future. This review traces the pterygium surgery techniques to the present day.

Key words: pterygium, reccurent pterygium, conjunctival autograft, limbal stem cells, amniotic membrane, fibrin glue
