Hiccups are a common and usually transient condition affecting almost everyone during their lifetime. A hiccup is also known as a “singultus” from the Latin, meaning ‘to catch one’s breath while sobbing. Hiccups result from a sudden and involuntary contraction of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles. with an abrupt closure of the glottis follows. They can result from a variety of causes, often by gastrointestinal disorders such as GER, but as well as a result of serious system disorders, medication side-effects, cardiovascular disorders ear, nose, and throat disorders, psychogenic disorders, or metabolic disorders. This topic discuss the etiology, pathophysiology, evaluation, and treatment of hiccups.
