Lung abscess is a rare pathology in childhood. It is essentially a circumscribed, thick-walled cavity in the lung parenchyma containing pus and necrotic matter. Depending on the presence or absence of an underlying disease, it is classified as primary or secondary. The early symptoms of lung abscess are similar to those of acute pneumonia – impaired general condition, septic fever, excruciating cough, weakness, chest pain and headache. On imaging studies, when communication with a bronchus has occurred, the abscess is depicted as a round, thick-walled cavity with a diameter of more than 2 cm and a hydro-aerial level. The combination of antibiotic treatment and interventional procedures lead to a favorable clinical course, reduction of complications and full recovery of patients.
