Acute prostatitis is a common urinary tract infection. It affects approximately 1% of men during their lifetime with symptoms ranging from mild discomfort when urinating to severe septic conditions. To make a correct diagnosis, the combination of clinical signs that may suggest the development of acute prostatitis is accepted. Treatment is based on antibiotic therapy. Antibiotic therapy is according to the performed antibiogram for a period of time in total from three to six weeks. It is important to continue monitoring patients with follow-up tests until symptoms disappear and microbiologically sterile urine is achieved one to four weeks after stopping treatment.
