Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of irreversible central vision loss in developed countries. Due to extended life expectancy and increasing aging population worldwide, the number of people affected by the disease is expected to increase exponentially. It requires regular screening, early diagnosis and timely treatment. The loss of visual acuity in advanced stages of the disease (geographic atrophy and neovascular AMD) is a serious social and economic issue.
