The human gastrointestinal tract contains a large number of organisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses) with different locations and various health impacts. The highest number of microbial colonies can be found in the colon. The formation of microbiota starts after the infant’s birth and is dependent on many factors such as method of delivery, birthplace, way of life, diseases, medications. The microbiota is key in maintaining good health by protecting the host from pathogenic microorganism, by stimulating and modulating the immune system, affecting metabolism. A change in microbiota homeostasis could cause chronic disease, involving any organ or system in the human body.
