Hepatocellular carcinoma is an oncological disease of increasing importance, the diagnosis and treatment of which requires a multidisciplinary approach. The key to successful treatment is early diagnosis. The goal is to identify risk groups and monitor them regularly to enable timely diagnosis and definitive treatment. In Bulgaria, alcoholic or viral liver cirrhosis is the most common underlying pathology that leads to the development of HCC. The diagnostic strategy involves performing imaging studies in combination with histological verification. In the earlier stages of the disease, definitive treatment is possible – surgical resection, local ablation and liver transplantation. In recent years, there has been significant progress in terms of palliative therapies – targeted and immunotherapy.
