Children with chronic wet cough represent a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge not only for GPs and pediatricians, but also for pediatric pulmonologists. Protracted bacterial bronchitis (PPB) is a chronic, protracted bacterial inflammation of the airways characterized by a daily wet cough for more than 4 weeks and a rapid, dramatic response to antibiotic therapy. The disease has been described relatively recently, and its knowledge will contribute to the correct assessment of children with chronic cough, as well as avoiding the frequent misdiagnosis as asthma and subsequent inadequate treatment. Targeted attention and follow-up of children with chronic whooping cough is particularly important because of the potential for PBB to progress to bronchiectasis over the years. On the other hand, any child with a chronic wet cough should be thoroughly investigated to rule out another, alternative diagnosis.
Key words: chronic wet cough, children, protracted bacterial bronchitis
