The inability to conceive during targeted planned pregnancy and consecutive attempts (more than 12 ovulatory cycles) can be due to various reasons that impede the processes of fertilization and implantation. In the male partner, it is often a consequence of reduced sperm concentration and motility, abnormal morphology, DNA chain fragmentation, sperm antibodies, etc. In women, it usually concerns cases of obstruction of the fallopian tubes, various diseases such as endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease, or reduced ovarian reserve. However, in-depth tests assigned of couples who seek treatment in assisted reproduction clinics often reveals a combination of male and female factors or unexplained infertility.
Many factors causing infertility are irreversible and are the result of pathological processes or the natural course of life. However, lifestyle factors in both women and men such as smoking, excessive alcohol intake, obesity, and poor nutrition are associated with lower chances of achieving successful pregnancy.
