Endometriosis is a non-contagious disease in which tissue similar to that of the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium) spreads outside of it, usually in organs in the pelvic area, but in some cases elsewhere in the body. These formations can cause a number of symptoms such as pain and become the cause of infertility. Endometriosis can lead to temporary or permanent disability and cause many women to lose their jobs. The high health costs associated with managing the symptoms of the disease and its consequences are a serious problem for patients. Many patients do not recognize the symptoms of endometriosis because they can be associated with a number of other diseases. Lack of sufficient information often leads to late diagnosis. It is often believed that pain during menstruation is something normal, but this is not the case. It is always a sign of a problem and a sign that we need to pay attention.
A hysterectomy and pregnancy is not a long-term solution to the problem. A diagnosis of endometriosis does not automatically mean infertility. Therapy often needs to be a personalized combination of operative gynecology (surgery), medical treatment, and lifestyle changes (diet, exercise regimen, emotional state).
In order to offer patients a complex interdisciplinary approach to the disease endometriosis, Dr. Shterev Hospital established an Endometriosis Center with a team of 13 specialists in interdisciplinary fields at the beginning of January 2023.
