Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a form of heart failure in which the left ventricle is unable to pump enough blood effectively, despite the ejection fraction being within normal range. This condition primarily affects older patients and women and is often caused by other conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and chronic kidney disease. Symptoms of HFpEF are similar to those of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), but can be more subjective and develop more slowly. The most common symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, leg swelling, and limited physical ability.Diagnosing HFpEF requires a detailed medical history, physical examination, echocardiography, and additional tests such as stress tests or coronary angiography if necessary. Treatment for HFpEF focuses on relieving symptoms, slowing disease progression, and reducing the risk of complications. This includes medications to control blood pressure, diuretics, exercise therapy, and a healthy lifestyle. It is important for patients with HFpEF to be regularly monitored by a cardiologist to manage symptoms and adjust their treatment.HFpEF is a clinical syndrome with pathophysiological changes in the cardiovascular system and systemic manifestations in multiple organs. Clinical signs and symptoms should be recognized and treatment should be individualized. Early diagnosis and a comprehensive approach to treatment can help improve patients‘ quality of life and prevent complications.
