Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a natural death from a cardiac cause, accompanied by loss of consciousness that occurs in less than 1 hour after the onset of symptoms. The main causes for SCD are ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia due to structural heart disease. As a result of the wider use of the new therapies for heart failure with reduced ejection fraction of the left ventricle (HFrEF) – angiotensin-receptor/neprilysin inhibitors, sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors and guanylate-cyclase stimulators in the last few years, a reduction in the cases of SCD is observed. The advancement in the treatment of HFrEF sets the need for revision of the recommendations and criteria for implantation of cardioverters-defibrillators (ICD) in this patients‘ population.
