Ecthyma contagiosum is an infectious zoonosis caused by an epitheliotropic DNA virus of the Poxviridae family. It is seen in people who have contact with infected sheep and goats. The lesions are localized at the site of contact, most often on the fingers, and present as erythematous papules followed by hemorrhagic pustules or bullae and centrally located brownish crusts. The disease resolves spontaneously over a period of 3 to 6 weeks. Local antiseptics and systemic antibiotics are used for treatment. This article reports a case of the disease and reviews the literature.
