Nutritional Therapy as a Modifiable Risk Factor for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) – Summary and Facts

отGP News публикувано на 28.08.2023 Nutrition, Dietetics, Metabolism

Issue 8/2023

Grudeva, L., Medical University – Varna

Following the epidemic of overweight and obesity, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is rapidly becoming a leading cause of potentially progressive liver disease leading to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The information explosion and the improved global economy in the last few decades have led to the modernization of society, making the high-energy „Western“ diet popular worldwide, which is becoming a major reason for the increasing prevalence of NAMCH. This shows that excessive caloric intake and a more „comfortable“ lifestyle with low physical activity can significantly contribute to the development of fatty liver disease.
Dietary therapy may influence the development of NAMCH either by increasing the risk or by providing protective factors.

Key words: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, diet, inflammation, metabolically related fatty liver disease
