Organokines are a group of factors, including adipokines, hepatokines, myokines, osteokines. These proteins modulate metabolic and energy balance in various tissues of the human body. They participate in the regulation of cellular behavior and communication, chronic inflammation processes and metabolism under physiological, and pathological conditions. New studies report the involvement of organokines in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome, obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases and dementia. Common mechanisms in the development and progression of these disorders are discussed.
Key words: adipokines, hepatokines, myokines, osteokines, obesity, type 2 diabetes, inflammation
